Despite decades of protests, laws, and prominent change-makers demanding equality for women, the gender pay gap is still a massive problem in our society. From the lowest paid jobs to the very highest, inequality is rife. Even for some of the world’s most famous celebrities, the gender pay gap is still a massive concern.
After Sony Pictures was hacked last year, emails surfaced revealing exactly what actors and actresses were being paid for their roles. Emails from Sony boss Amy Pascal revealed that Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams were paid much less than their male American Hustle co-stars Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper.
Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch, who play Amy and Bernadette respectively, were previously earning $200,000 each – much less than the original five cast members, who each earn $1 million per episode.
Incredibly, instead of allowing tension and resentment to grow between the cast, the original five have decided they will each take a pay cut to free up money for Bialik and Rauch. According to Variety, Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Kunal Nayyar and Simon Helberg all decided they would each take a $100,000 pay cut. This might seem like a lot, but when you’re earning $1 million an episode, it’s peanuts.
Bialik and Rauch are now earning $450,000 per episode. While this is still less than their co-stars, at least they can enjoy the fact that their pay packet has increased by more than double. Contract negotiations are still ongoing, but I’m willing to bet there’s a lot of positive vibes going around the The Big Bang Theory dressing rooms right about now.
